ON September 22, photographer Jason Bryant wrote this on his Facebook wall: "Need a model to recreate the American Beauty picture – over 18 and blonde please.
"Contact me if you fancy it, the shoot will be in two weeks' time."
Jason was contacted by lots of attractive ladies and one was selected.
Her name was Ashton Porter, from Street, and she was the model who inspired The Legends of Somerset calendar.
But during the resulting Facebook conversation it was suggested by all-round musical genius Doug Siddons that a calendar should be created of balding males over 50, naked except for appropriate props protecting what was left of their modesty.
Before Jason knew it, Derek Cooper had agreed with Doug and had roped Jason into doing the pictures.
Derek said: "It was a joke at first and plenty of people said they'd pay us not to do it."
But as the willing participants lined up, it quickly stopped being just a crazy Facebook idea and in four weeks the calendar was a reality.
Sales of the calendar will raise funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
Two of its stars, Wayne Stiling and Mark Tobin, have had personal experience of the help given to cancer patients by Macmillan.
In The Legends of Somerset calendar not everybody is balding or over 50, but they are all Somerset legends of the highest calibre.
It is to be officially launched today, Thursday, November 14, at The Swan Hotel in Wells and will then be available from various locations in the city including Wells Cinema, The Swan Hotel, City News, Griggs Newsagents and a stall in Wells Market Place on Saturdays.
The calendars will cost £10.
