HOLIDAYING in Cornwall recently, I noticed an advertisement in the local press for Bodmin Jail, which is now a tourist attraction, with a restaurant, cream teas and so on.

I was impressed by this ad and wondered why Shepton Mallet couldn't do likewise with our historic jail, possibly including a museum, containing all our historic industries over the 400 years since it was built, such as the silk and wool mills, the breweries, bacon factory and shoes factory.

This would attract visitors into Shepton Mallet and hopefully put our town back on the map.

We ourselves, in the past, have visited attractions such as the super museum in the Elan Valley, in Derbyshire, which explains about their industry and the start of the Black Death, which was very interesting and well thought out.

So come on, Shepton Mallet, get your act together, set up a trust or share option and stop wasting time and money heating an empty prison instead of using a potential gold mine.
