The Olympic success of brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee has sparked a surge in interest in triathlon across the country.

And people from Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury and all surrounding areas can now give the multi-event sport a try following the launch of Mendip Triathlon Club.

It has been started by local triathletes with 20 years of experience between them and specialist coaching will be overseen by Martin Hill, who has also completed in numerous Ironman events.

Links are being established with various other clubs in the area in order to provide members with varied, structured and flexible training sessions.

The first major affiliation is with Mendip Cycling Club, whose members biked to the seaside on Sunday to cheer on those competing in the Burnham- on-Sea Olympic Triathlon event.

And they saw Michelle Blackmore claim a first medal for the newly-formed club by winning her age group, completing the swim, cycle and run in 2hrs 52mins.

People of all ages and experience, including complete beginners, who would like to try out triathlon can visit www.mendiptriathlonclub.com or email mendiptriathlonclub @yahoo.co.uk for more information.

Details about Mendip Cycling Club are available by emailing paul@paul-knight.co.uk.
